What Makes Khadi Different

September 2026 · IZRA Studio

Khadi is spun by hand, on a charkha, before it is ever woven — which is the detail most people miss when they hear the word. It isn’t a finish or a print; it’s a fibre-to-cloth process that has barely changed since it became a symbol of Indian self-reliance last century.

Why it feels different

Hand-spun yarn is uneven in a way machine-spun cotton never is — slightly thicker in places, slightly thinner in others. That irregularity is what gives khadi its characteristic texture: breathable, a little nubby to the touch, and — because the weave is looser — noticeably cooler to wear than most cotton.

How to spot the real thing

Genuine khadi has a faint unevenness across the weave that machine-loomed cotton doesn’t. It softens with every wash rather than pilling, and it takes natural dye beautifully because the fibre hasn’t been mechanically compressed.

Caring for it

Hand wash or gentle machine wash in cold water, dry in shade rather than direct sun, and iron while still slightly damp. Treated well, a khadi garment only gets better with age.
