The Chandigarh Bride’s Trousseau Guide: What to Buy, and When

Punjabi wedding week isn’t one event, it’s six or seven, each with its own dress code, and most Chandigarh brides start realising how much that adds up to somewhere around the Roka. This is the order we’d shop in, and roughly how far ahead of each function to place a custom order.
Start here: book bespoke pieces first, buy off-the-rack last
Anything custom-tailored — a bridal lehenga, a fitted sherwani for the groom, a made-to-order sangeet outfit — needs the longest runway. At IZRA, bespoke bridalwear typically needs 6–8 weeks from first fitting to final delivery. Ready pieces, worn for the smaller functions, can be decided far closer to the date.
Roka / Engagement — 3 to 4 months out
Lighter than the wedding day itself, but still photographed heavily. A khadi or silk Anarkali in a soft jewel tone works well here — structured enough for the occasion, comfortable enough for a full day of receiving guests.
Mehendi — 6 to 8 weeks out
The one function where colour and comfort matter more than formality. This is where Phulkari earns its place: a Phulkari kurta set or a plain outfit worn under a Phulkari dupatta photographs beautifully against mehendi’s yellow-and-green colour palette, and holds up through hours of sitting.
Haldi — 4 to 6 weeks out
Simple cotton or khadi separates in yellow, worn once and often gifted onward afterward — this is not the function to spend a custom-order budget on.
Sangeet — 6 to 8 weeks out
The one night where a heavier, more constructed silhouette makes sense — a fitted silk lehenga or a structured Anarkali built to move through an evening of dancing. If a custom cut is part of the plan, the sangeet outfit should be ordered at the same time as the bridal lehenga, not after.
Anand Karaj / Wedding Day — 8 weeks out, minimum
The centrepiece, and the piece to order first, before anything else on this list. A bridal lehenga or heavy silk ensemble in zari or Phulkari work needs multiple fittings — the earlier the first one happens, the more room there is to adjust the final fit without rushing it.
Reception — 4 to 6 weeks out
Often the one function where a bride wears something closer to contemporary eveningwear rather than traditional bridal red — a structured silk gown or a fitted, embellished saree. Order this alongside the sangeet outfit rather than as an afterthought.
A simple rule of thumb
Work backwards from the wedding date: book the bridal lehenga and sangeet outfit first, at the 8-week mark, and let everything lighter — mehendi, haldi, the smaller family outfits — fill in behind it as the date gets closer. Trying to do it in date order, function by function, is how most trousseau timelines run out of runway for the one piece that actually needed it.
IZRA takes bespoke bridal and wedding-week orders from our Sector 17, Chandigarh atelier, with fittings arranged in person or by appointment. Get in touch to start a trousseau order, or see current bridal and occasion pieces for inspiration first.
